Perris was founded in 1885 as a stop on the California Southern Railroad, named for Fred T. Perris, the railroad’s chief engineer — making it one of the oldest towns in this part of Riverside County, well before Temecula, Murrieta, or any of its newer neighbors existed as incorporated cities. That railroad-town history means Perris has a genuine older core mixed in with newer development on its edges, a wider age range in its housing stock than you’ll find in the planned communities nearby. It’s also home to Perris Valley Airport and Skydive Perris, one of the busiest skydiving operations in the country, a real regional draw that brings visitors — and eventually some buyers — into the city who might not otherwise have looked here.
