The city takes its name from Juan Murrieta, a cattle rancher who settled the valley in the 1870s, and it stayed a small agricultural and ranching community for over a century before the housing growth of the 1990s and 2000s reshaped it into the planned-neighborhood city it is today. That timing matters for buyers: most of Murrieta’s housing stock was built in a fairly compressed window, so lot sizes and floor plans read more consistently street to street than in older, more organically built cities nearby.
